Between Friday afternoon, December 4, and Saturday night, December 5, 2026, Manteo has six separate holiday events on the calendar. They are a tree lighting, a parade, the Manteo Preservation Trust's holiday tour, a waterfront market, Christmas Past at Island Farm and WinterLights at The Elizabethan Gardens, and the last two run both days.
Two weeks earlier, a smaller cluster opens the season over three nights in a row. Most of the rest of November and December is quieter. If you live on Roanoke Island, plan the season around those two clusters. Your calendar, your parking and your houseguests will all be easier for it.
The week the island switches to evenings
This weekend still runs on the fall schedule. The Outer Banks Environmental Film Festival is in Manteo November 5 through 7, according to Roanoke Island Festival Park's events calendar. The park's fall living-history programs keep going for two more weeks. Elizabethan Brewing demonstrations run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. through November 19. Friday sword training runs from 10 a.m. to noon through November 20.
The Town of Manteo's annual fall litter pickup is Saturday, November 14. Coffee and donuts start at 8:45 a.m., and the pickup begins at 9, per the Town's news page. It's the last community event before the decorations go up.
Then the island moves to an evening schedule. The Elizabethan Gardens stop selling daytime general admission after November 18 and stay closed on November 19. From November 20 on, the Gardens open only for WinterLights, from 6 to 9 p.m., and stay that way for the whole run. For anyone who walks the gardens on a weekday afternoon, November 18 is the last chance until the lights come down after December 29.
November 20 to 22, three nights in a row
The season's first cluster opens with two events on the same Friday evening, a few miles apart.
Friday, November 20. The Town's Merry Market runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at George Washington Creef Park, 104 Fernando Street. Expect local vendors, hot cocoa and music, plus collection for the Manteo Police Department's Food & Coat Drive. WinterLights opens its 2026 run the same night at 6. Since the market closes at 8 and the Gardens close at 9, you can do both if you go to the waterfront first and drive to the Gardens after.
Saturday, November 21. The Holiday Craft Market at Manteo Baptist Church runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with handmade gifts and a free hot lunch. WinterLights is open again that evening.
Sunday, November 22. This is Virginia Dare Night, the one evening of the season set aside for local residents. Dominion Energy sponsors it, and the Gardens host it for residents of Dare, Currituck and Tyrrell counties during WinterLights' 17th season. Admission costs a donation of nonperishable food, which goes to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry. The night comes with a few requirements, and they're easy to miss:
- Reserve online. Tickets are limited, and every guest must reserve one ahead of time. In late October the Gardens' page still showed the ticket link as "coming soon," so check back often.
- Bring proof of residency. A driver's license or utility bill showing a Dare, Currituck or Tyrrell County address works.
- Bring unexpired food. The Gardens suggest cooking oil, condiments, canned tuna or chicken, pasta and sauce, rice, peanut butter, canned stew, boxed cereal and tea bags. They can't accept anything past its date.
- Come early to drop off. Donation collection starts at 5 p.m., and doors open at 6.
- There are no rain checks. The tickets are free, so a cancelled night isn't rescheduled.
November 22 isn't on the Gardens' list of regular ticketed evenings, and the page describes it separately. If you're planning a second visit with paid tickets, check that list before you buy.
Thanksgiving week runs at a slower pace
Things ease off for the week after the opening cluster, and some attractions set their own holiday hours. The Aquarium on Roanoke Island is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with timed entry and closes on Thanksgiving, November 26. The last reservation is at 4 p.m., and the last entry is at 4:30. If you're hosting family, book a time slot ahead. You can't walk in at the end of the afternoon.
WinterLights is open November 25, 27 and 28 but not on Thanksgiving night. Tickets are $22 for adults 13 and older and $14 for ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and under get in free, and a well-behaved dog costs $6. Tickets can't be refunded unless the Gardens cancel the night. If weather is a problem, the Gardens send a notice to ticket holders by 2 p.m.
The 12 Bars of Christmas starts the day after Thanksgiving and runs from November 27 through January 3, 2027. A $10 passport benefits local charities. Manteo has three of the holiday pop-ups. Outer Banks Distilling on Budleigh Street becomes "Deck The Hulls." Poor Richard's on Queen Elizabeth Avenue becomes "Poor Rudolf's." Blue Water Grill on Sailfish Drive becomes the "North Pole Yacht Club."
Small Business Saturday is November 28. The Town's listing encourages shopping downtown and says Roanoke Island Garden Club "elves" will decorate the waterfront. The planters along that waterfront have a story of their own. The Coastland Times reported this week on Verdant Minds' Planted Potential project. About 25 participants meet roughly once a month to plant and care for Manteo's planters, and one of them has an apprenticeship to maintain them on a regular schedule. The paper also reported that residents had noticed the planters near the marina and boardwalk needed care and started helping.
December 4 and 5, hour by hour
The second cluster is the busier one. The Town calls the tree lighting the kickoff of its holiday season, and it falls on the same weekend as Island Farm's Christmas Past and the Manteo Preservation Trust tour. WinterLights is open both nights. Here's how the two days line up:
| Day | Time | Event | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri, Dec 4 | 2–7 p.m. | Christmas Past | Island Farm | $11 ages 4+, free 0–3 |
| Fri, Dec 4 | 4–8 p.m. | Town Christmas Tree Lighting | Downtown Manteo | Free |
| Fri, Dec 4 | 6–9 p.m. | WinterLights | The Elizabethan Gardens | $22 adult, $14 youth |
| Sat, Dec 5 | 10 a.m.–4 p.m. | Holiday Marlin Market | Pirate's Cove Marina Pavilion | No price listed |
| Sat, Dec 5 | 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Christmas Parade | Manteo High School to College of The Albemarle | Free |
| Sat, Dec 5 | 1–6 p.m. | Manteo Preservation Trust Holiday Tour | Tickets at 108 Budleigh St. | $25 |
| Sat, Dec 5 | 2–7 p.m. | Christmas Past | Island Farm | $11 ages 4+, free 0–3 |
| Sat, Dec 5 | 6–9 p.m. | WinterLights | The Elizabethan Gardens | $22 adult, $14 youth |
The tree lighting has carols, dancing, hot cocoa, Christmas cookies and reindeer games, and Mrs. Claus reads "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." At Christmas Past, Island Farm adds historical interpreters, cider, cookies, a bonfire and crafts. Both events run on Friday afternoon, so families can catch the farm before dark and still be downtown for the lighting.
Saturday is more crowded. The Christmas Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. at Manteo High School and goes through downtown to the far side of the College of The Albemarle campus. The Town asks spectators to stay off the parade route. The Marlin Market at Pirate's Cove opens at 10 a.m. If you plan to go to both, the market stays open until 4, so it can wait until the parade is over. The Holiday Tour begins at 1 p.m. Day-of tickets go on sale at 11:30 a.m. at 108 Budleigh Street, while the parade is still on the streets.
Expect parking and traffic changes too. Last year the Town posted its parking and traffic routes for the Christmas events on November 26 to cover December 4 through 6. No 2026 notice is out yet, so watch the Town's news page in the days before the parade. For WinterLights, guests have to park in the Gardens' marked spaces. Overflow parking is at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, with a shuttle on select nights. On a weekend like this one, consider booking WinterLights for a weeknight instead.
After the parade, the evenings take over
After December 5 the daytime schedule thins out, and the season continues in the evenings. Good Shot Judy brings "A Crooners Christmas" to the Pioneer Theater at 109 Budleigh Street on Friday, December 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. The next evening, December 12, the Roanoke Island Holiday Flotilla runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Lighted boats follow a loop along the waterfront, and the winners are announced at the gazebo afterward. WinterLights is open both nights, so you have another chance to do two things in one evening.
For daytime plans with visiting family, Roanoke Island Festival Park is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through December 31, with some holiday closures. Admission is $15 for adults, $13 for ages 3 to 12, and free for ages 2 and under. The Aquarium closes on Christmas Day. WinterLights has its last four nights December 26 through 29.
